Our Green Business Practices

fitBERNALfit and fitGLENfit are proud to be San Francisco’s first green fitness centers while Sunporch Yoga is San Francisco’s first green yoga studio, certified by the San Francisco Green Business Program. Our environmental mission is to inspire the local community to become more environmentally conscious by focusing on conservation, waste diversion, and education. We strive to achieve  sustainability by making decisions based on the best wellness options available for good health and the environment.

Here are some of the core steps we’ve taken toward sustainability:

  • Both fitGLENfit and Sunporch Yoga Studio are fully powered by our solar power system.
  • We designed both facilities with reclaimed and recycled building materials including bamboo flooring, rubber flooring made from recycled athletic shoes (Nike grind), reclaimed cardboard lamp shades, repurposed bathroom tiles, reclaimed barn doors, and other second hand accessories.
  • Both facilities utilize natural light, open windows for ventilation and ceiling fans that silently and gently distribute air throughout the space, cooling down the space without the need for noisy, energy consuming and polluting air conditioning systems.
  • We’ve installed new plumbing and low-flow toilets and sinks to minimize water consumption at each location.
  • More than 75% of our cardio equipment is either battery or user powered.
  • We deploy energy efficient and energy star rated technology and appliances including computers, lights and fans
  • All of our yoga props are made by Manduka, whose green mission and eco-conscious products align with our environmental mission.
  • We compost and recycle 100% of our member daily consumed waste.
  • We use non-toxic, natural gym wipes and cleaners, recycled paper products, and natural hand sanitizers.
  • Our locations and business model promote walking and biking to the gym instead of driving.
  • We offer filtered tap water instead of non-sustainable, costly bottled water.
  • We serve organic dog treats and uses compostable dog waste bags.
  • Our marketing materials use soy or vegetable dyes and are printed on recycled and tree-free materials.
  • We are members of both the Bernal Heights and Glen Park Business Alliances, and we support local, independent and like-minded green businesses.
  • We provide recycled flour sack workout towels for members upon signup instead of laundering single-use towels.

Things you can do to help us stay green:

  • Bring a reusable water bottle with you from home to minimize the need for compostable disposable cups.
  • Reduce electricity consumption by adjusting the fans and lights when not in use.
  • Bring your own workout towels to eliminate excess water-waste from laundering single-use towels.
  • Walk, bike, or take public transportation to the gym instead of driving.
